Mental Skills Training Programs

What percent of your sport is mental? 40, 50, or maybe even 75%? Even if it is only 40%, are you spending 40% of your time training the mental side of your game? Most likely not, and that’s normal! The good news is that means there is a lot of room for growth. Structured mental skills training will provide you with the tools you need to develop authentic, unwavering confidence, anti-fragile resilience, and the ability to deliver your best performances when it matters most.

We know you don’t want to be normal, so we didn’t put together a normal mental skills training program. Most programs give you a few basic tools and focus on developing one specific mental skill like confidence or focus. Our program provides an in-depth approach to helping you know yourself, identify who you want to become, master the foundational mental tools, and plan to integrate them into your daily work right away. Additionally, the program includes a “Teacher’s Edition” resource that teaches parents/coaches how to guide athletes through the program, a “Parents Preliminary Guide” that teaches coaches or parents how to walk to walk and model mental toughness, a guide to developing the “8 Habits of Mentally Tough Athletes,” and an additional guide for understanding the “5 Foundations of Mental Toughness.” It is a 5-in-1 program designed to help you become the best version of yourself.

The 5 minute mindset podcast with Dr. Colt Olson is designed to help you understand and apply world-class psychological concepts that you can use to improve your performance as an athlete, student, employee, coach, or boss in about 5 minutes.

About Dr. Colt

Colt Olson is described by friends, colleagues, and clients as an insightful, passionate, and innovative teacher. Using a relationship driven model he empowers athletes, coaches, and executives to take control of their thinking and use cutting edge mental conditioning principles to take their performance to an elite level. Dr. Colt is a former two sport collegiate athlete who possesses a Master’s Degree in Sport Psychology, a Ph.D. in Educational psychology, and currently works as a mental Skills Coordinator with the Colorado Rockies.

My passion for performance psychology comes from the experiences I had as a collegiate athlete. As an athlete, I never lived up to my potential. When I first started my career, I was the “high upside guy” and eventually turned into the “guy that should be better than he is,” It seemed like no matter how much extra physical work I put in, or how well I performed in practice I just couldn’t put it together on the field. As frustrating as these struggles were, I am beyond grateful for them because they led me to where I am today. My experiences as an athlete inspired me to pursue a career that focuses on helping athletes and coaches overcome the struggles I couldn’t, using tools I didn’t have. Now after years of graduate school, teaching, and thousands of hours of mental performance lessons in the dugouts across the country, I am blessed with the opportunity to share what I’ve learned with you.

What Does “Raido” Mean?

 

Raido is an ancient Nordic symbol that represents an important journey. It was often used to describe journeys of self-mastery, the pursuit of something meaningful, living in the present moment, and taking immediate action. We believe this symbol is a great representation of our work in sport psychology. The decision to strengthen the mental part of your game is an important decision and the beginning of a new, exciting journey. Let’s take the first step and start unlocking your full potential!

8-Week Course Outline

Week 1 – High Performance Mindset

The first step in taking your performance to the next level is embracing a new mindset. A mindset that prioritizes high-quality thinking through a consistent pursuit of excellence, adaptability, resilience, ownership/responsibility, and training the mental tools as often as the physical tools. Adopting this mindset takes a commitment, a commitment we’ll make as a team right here.

Week 2 – Establishing your team’s “Mental Architecture”

Most athletes are not wired to handle adversity or failure properly. Establishing the right “mental architecture” re-wires your brain and prepares you to develop real mental toughness, a love for challenges, resilience, enjoyment, a relentless competitive attitude, and consistent high-level performance.

Weeks 3 & 4 – Mastering mental toughness

You’ve established your mental architecture (the general mindset and beliefs you use as daily standards), now you need to master the mental tools that will be built on top of this foundation. In this program you’ll master mental tools like self-talk, emotional control, goal setting, confidence, imagery, and resilience.

Week 5 – The Power of Pressure

Every athlete wants to perform well in big moments, but many of them struggle to handle the pressure those moments bring. Whether it’s a game winning shot with the state championship on the line or one last strike to secure a no-hitter, we need our best in the biggest moments. Here we’ll discuss the power of pressure, and what you can do to use it to your advantage.

Week 6 – Daily Mental Excellence

Everything you’ve learned up to this point is powerful, but it isn’t enough just to know what mental excellence is, you need to live it every day. Elite performers establish intentional performance routines that help them keep their mental skills sharp and perform their best consistently. It’s time for you to put your new mentality to work every day and let it drive consistent, high-level performance.

Week 7 – Going From Pain to Productive

Every athlete deals with failure, it’s one aspect of sports that nobody can escape. Even though everyone fails, not everyone responds to failure the same way. Average athletes let failure hurt their confidence and prevent them from playing well in the future, elite athletes use failure to drive growth and become a stronger version of themselves. In other words, they take the pain of failure and use to become more productive.

Week 8 – Unleash the Competitor

Elite competitors understand that when the lights come on and it’s time to go to work, they need to be completely committed to trusting their skills and unleashing the competitor. The final step in this program is learning how to use the powerful tools you’ve developed over the last 7 weeks and understand what it takes for you to unleash the competitor inside you and perform at an elite level every time you compete from here on out.
